Nieuw Vennep is a village in the Randstad that has dramatically doubled in size after the construction of Getsewoud, a new housing area of 7,000 homes (built between 1995 and 2005). As part of this development, a new park (north park) has been planned along the northern periphery of the village for abundant recreation.
An ambitious plan
The program for this area (approximately 45 Ha) was originally intended to form a recreational park. Due to a lack of alternative accommodation, a new program was added, ultimately two football clubs (9 competition fields and two clubhouses), a hockey complex (3 fields), a tennis complex (6 indoor and 14 outdoor fields), a combined sports hall and swimming complex, a garden complex. and 243 homes (highest segment of the market) to finance the plan. Water requirement retained 11% (5Ha) of the total area. As a result of the area’s location in one of the deepest parts of the polder, water flows are limited to 10 meters wide due to concerns about salt water breaking through the surface, making large areas of open water impossible to achieve. are.
A conventional concept of organizing different activities in fixed parts would have meant here (due to an abundance of programme) that there would have been very little room for extensive recreation. Instead, an alternative concept was chosen to integrate the program through overlapping use and thus gain space for the design of a park. For example, large homes are given small gardens, which in return are offset by being placed in an extensive green setting. This green area is in turn dimensioned to be usable for both public use and to serve as an extended garden for the residents. The football fields are grouped in such a way that they provide openness in the plan. These open spaces not only provide depth with views and layered compositions in the park, but they also form the viewing arenas around which the houses are built. The housing construction, in turn, provides a sense of security for recreational users coming to and from the sports facilities. In this way, the plan becomes a layered arrangement of different program components with a spatial interdependence that often results in surprising combinations. The water is limited to straight canals that appear quite strict in plan but which contrast with the three-dimensional undulating landscape of gentle hills that offer a succession of different views and images to recreationists when they move around the park.
